What is Blues Dancing?

Blues dancing is far and away the most creative, expressive, and improvisational of all social dances. The follower has greater opportunity for personal expression than any other dance. There are no real 'rules' for blues dancing. 'Failure' is a welcome option which quite often leads to new playful steps or moves. Connection, partnering, playfulness, expressiveness, call and
response, emotional intensity, tension and release, and musicality are words commonly used in blues classes.

Blues Dancing is danced to blues music, typically with a close embrace, often with a gently swaying of the hips, though the hold will change often to a standard swing one hand hold. There are various types of blues music: slow, smooth, soulful, rural, urban, electric, or delta. Based originally on slow Lindy swing dance moves, Blues has evolved its own dance lexicon. Many Blues dancers have included styles from  East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Lindy, Tango, Zouklove, and Foxtrot.

Blues is difficult to describe in words, as each dance is unique to each couple. The most obvious distinguishing features of blues dancing are: 1) blues dancing is slower than any other dance; 2) couples usually have a closer hold than other dance 3) greater improvization 4) almost total lack of interest in how the dance looks, and great value on how the dance feels. There are no basic or standard steps. Unlike other dance forms, there are only a few 'named' steps in blues. eh, hope that helps? We suggest you look at the videos listed above to gain a better understanding. Or goto youtube and search for "Blues dancing".

New to blues?
A first time blues dancer will probably have an easier and more enjoyable first time dance experience at blues than any other dance. A first time dancer can enjoy an evening of blues dancing with highly experienced dancers as well as other dancers new to blues.

DJ Playlist Guidelines

for South Bay Blues Dance

South Bay Blues is a weekly blues dance on Sunday evening in the San Francisco south bay, covering mostly Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz county, southern San Mateo county and southern Alameda County.

Music is generally broken down into 3 sets of one hour each, mostly as we often have three djs, playing for one hour sets, though often we have a single dj for three hours, in which case there is no break.

The music at SB Blues is all blues. Many of the tunes should follow the typical blues 12 bar chord progression, but not at all required.

We much prefer no tune longer than 5 minutes. The tune has to be quite special to go longer than 5 minutes.  4 minutes as an average for all tunes is a pretty good measure. If the average length starts to go over 4:20, then we know there are probably too many long tunes.  There is very little to no breaks between tunes or sets, unless there is a dj change. There is very little or no dj talk, other than to introduce yourself, to ask for comments, make announcements, or if the tune is very special or has unusual tempo changes, for instance.

Generally we prefer to change tempo on each tune. Tempos should range generally from a low of 55 to a maximum of about 115. A  series of slow tempos tunes under 70 is discouraged.  Tempos under 70 are perfectly fine, but ideally used perhaps 2 to 3 times in an hour set. The vast majority of tunes should be between 70 and 90. Tempos above 110 or so are usually closer to West Coast Swing tempos, and will often clear the floor. Having an occasionally tune with a tempo above 110 often generates complaints.

Most djs use itunes on a laptop computer. A very few use ipod or iphones. We supply the cables, wired microphone, and sound system. Some djs program a complete playlist. Some like to have a set list, and substitute as they determine the level and interests of the dancers. Either way if ok with us

If you are looking for playlist suggestions, try googling these search parameters “blues playlists” or “blues tunes suggestions”. You will have fun researching.

About South Bay Blues
South Bay Blues is more of a regularly scheduled blues house party than any official blues dance. We love blues dancing, but the time and gas cost to San Francisco or Berkeley is a bit too much for some of us. So we started our own local blues dance. We are looking for volunteer djs! come express yourself and your dancing by djing for a hour or so!
